Three Boeing 767-200s are about to be equipped with anti-missile laser jammers , perhaps as early as this spring . Once installed these devices will be tested while the passenger planes fly there normal cross country routes . No actual missiles will be fired at the aircraft . The Department of Homeland Security which is pushing for this will be testing and evaluating the jamming systems . To install a unit on each plane would cost around $500,000 to $ 1,000,000 dollars per aircraft , something American Airlines seems less than happy to pay . Should this jamming system work however it would cause shoulder fired missiles ( which are easily attainable on the black market for a few hundred dollars ) to veer harmlessly away from the aircraft . If however private companies like American Airlines refuses to pay for the new units then it would fall on the federal government to foot the bill , in other words you and me .
